Halloween Portrait:
"The Living Dead"

"This is my year to do the scaring," says Brittany Jill, UMass senior. "I'm usually the hippie who can't walk down the street without screaming every ten seconds - but not this time. The tables have turned."
Brittany Jill, UMass senior, prepares for Halloween. "This is the one time of year you can be anything you want. You are in control."
"I want to walk amongst the dead this year," says Brittany Jill, UMass senior, as she prepares for Halloween. "I want to make people shudder every time I turn their way."
Brittany Jill, UMass senior, claims to be a Halloween junkie. "Why not? It's the one time of year you can let your imagination take you over - you can be anything. So why not see what it's like to walk on the other side?"

Photo Story Ideas...

1. I would like to photograph a musician of some form, particularly a band. One of my co-workers is in a band that plays shows in the Western Massachusetts area, all the way to Boston. Ideally, I would like to photograph them during band practice, at a show (I have to see if they will be performing between now and the time the assignment is due), and maybe individually practicing. I would focus on my co-worker, Tom, who plays the guitar and his "vagabond" lifestyle makes for an interesting subject.

2. Another one of my co-workers, Sila, came to the U.S. from Turkey about four years ago. She was studying physics at a university in Turkey. Sila and her physics T.A., Hunter, who was a graduate student from UMass - fell in love and got married. Hunter brought her to America one year later where they now live happily married; the couple just celebrated their five-year anniversary over the past weekend. She now studies art at a nearby community college. Sila is extremely Turkish and her background and thick accent make adjusting to life in America much more difficult than she had initially expected. I would like to capture Sila in her day-to-day activities - work, cooking, cleaning (she has severe OCD - which I was also thinking about concentrating on), and the troubles she has with the language barrier. I have already asked her for permission, and she gladly accepted.

3. I have one more back-up idea: I would like to photograph someone with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and capture the struggle they have with everyday life. I would photograph their OCD 'tendencies' and anything else that may characterize their disorder. I have already been in contact with someone I know who suffers from OCD and have her permission to do a photojournalism story on her.
